On Mulberry Street

The streets of Hyderabad are like Doctor Suess' Mulbery Street. We drive by most of the truly interesting stuff without being able to take a photo. Once in a while Jo has enough time to whip out an iPhone and take a shot while I weave around traffic to give her a better angle.

Signage

We see stuff that make us scratch our heads. Or roll around laughing. Here's some of the ones we managed to take pictures of. Jo took most of these photos with a shaky iPhone as we drove by. You'll have to click on most of them to read/see the signs.

Coconuts

I was driving back one morning when the streets weren't yet crowded. I stopped at a street vendor and bought eight green coconuts. He expertly sliced the husk and enough of the shell so that I could take them back home and poke a plastic straw through the thin and tender layer of newly formed coconut to drink the coconut milk. An eighth of an inch too little I would need to drill trough the shell. And eighth too much and the water would spill out the hole. While holding the coconut at arms length in one hand and hacking expertly with a curved steel machete with the other. All eight cost me about a dollar and fifty cents.

Evan and I loved them. Jo didn't. Vivian was neutral.

Vivian's Art

Vivian has quietly grown up yet again. She drew me and Jo the other day (I'm going to have to work on those jowls).

She says things everyday that surprise the heck out of me. Yesterday she was encouraging Evan to speak - "Say cat, ball, car, cracker, plankton...". She is beginning to spell - the other day we were planning a trip and Jo told me that "Vivian would prefer a b-e-a-c-h  vacation". Vivian said - "Yes - I would like to go to the beach".  We are going to have to find another way to communicate when we don't want Vivian to understand us. And she added one and two, two and two and one and one correctly. I asked her who had taught her that, and she said she figured it out herself.
