Are You All Having Babies Today?

A couple of weeks ago we called a local hospital and reserved two spots on their tour of baby facilities for expecting parents. We walked into the hospital lobby 5 minutes before the tour was scheduled to start and it felt like we had entered an altered reality in which everyone was pregnant.

In the five minutes that it took us to get started, most women visited the restrooms at least once. Then we got into the elevator and by the time we got off two floors later, all the women were fanning themselves vigorously and wondering why it was so warm. When we entered the mother-baby unit, we walked past a waiting area where some one asked us "Are you all having babies today?". Some of the guys laughed. One of the pregnant women replied: "Yep - we all got married in a mass wedding at the same time exactly 9 months ago". Which was funny mostly because the other women had dour expressions on their faces during the entire tour. I thought that if a comic was in need of a particularly hard audience to sharpen his or her comedy skills, a group of 8-month pregnant women would be a nice challenge.
