Plays

Jo got a bee in her bonnet and got us tickets for two plays over the last two weekends. Both were excellent. More recently, we went to see Charlotte's Web at the Zach. It was beautifully produced almost as a musical and Charlotte was played by an arial silk gymnast. The story as we all know isn't very happy - the kids laughed and I silently wiped tears from my eyes when I thought no one was looking.

We happened upon a performance that was also for deaf kids (there were two ASL signers who translated) and for children with sensory processing disorders (the staff subtly signaled scary or loud moments before they occurred). It was an enlightening experience.

After the play Vivian and Evan enjoyed playing in the huge live oak that grows in front of the Zach. It did cross my mind that they agreed to the play just so they could climb that tree.

The weekend before that we went to the Scottish Rite Theater for a performance of Rosita y Conchita. Another beautifully produced jewel of a play. Another dreadfully sad story that seemed to affect Jo and me much more than the kids.

The play prompted Vivian to build an alter for the Day of the Dead or Dias de los Muertos for Crazy who died this summer. And when it was DEAR time (drop everything and read) at Evan's class, she took the book Rosita y Conchita and read it for the twin boys (the story is about twin girls, one of whom dies) in Evan's class, while Evan sat and read Harry Potter (book IV) to himself.
