Drottningholm Palace is the official private residence of the Swedish royal family. Built on an island on the shores of the beautiful Lake Mälaren it is obvious that even back in the 16th century this was quality real estate.
We got there on a bright sunny stunningly beautiful morning after taking the T-bana (Stockholm subway with rather strange stations - think Durin on acid) and a bus. Most of the palace is open to visitors but we walked around to the back to spend the day in the beautiful gardens. There were baroque gardens, mazes, pools, ducks, flower gardens, Chinese pavilions, Persian barracks, and other non-pc things from the last four centuries. After a stop at the outdoor restaurant for french toast and Swedish shrimp salad (almost as frequently eaten here as meatballs), the kids played with a German baby (whose parents were enjoying the state-mandated parents-child bonding vacation). We called it a cultural success and headed to CentralStation and walked back to Skeppsholmen via bearded purple tulips and ice creams.
