On our first morning (well - it was afternoon by the time we got out of bed) in Amsterdam we took the kids to Nemo - a monumental children's science museum built in a structure that resembles the hull of a ship right on the Amstel river by the old docks.
This wasn't a walk in the Thinkery. They don't pull their punches around here. The man who set up the amazing Rube Goldberg contraption in the front lobby went on about conservation of energy in two languages at length while children of all ages waited anxiously. Further inside on that floor there were jars of things in formaldehyde - including human fetuses at several later stages of development. And the section on sex was built to look like something from the city's red light district with a blinking "peepshow" pink neon sign.
We didn't scratch the surface in the two odd hours we spent there but the kids had a fabulous time. Then we punted and went to the open air "beach" on the terrace. We had taken their swim suits and Vivian and Evan frolicked in the stair-step swimming pool with local and tourist children.
Evan wanted to stay there "forever". But we eventually walked back via the Neumarkt area where we stopped for dinner. The waiter struck up a friendship with Evan and eventually dressed him up in his apron and handed him a menu and almost sent him off to wait at a table.
We finished and headed south before turning towards our end of Amsterdam to avoid the red light district but we brushed up against it anyway - a sex toy and costume store with some items in the window that left Vivian asking interesting questions.
