Settling In

We are in Iceland for a week. The kids put on their jackets and head outside. They climb the little hill next to the house or eat their breakfast at the little cottage they discovered at one end of the yard. The place is green and wet and next to a lake with a stream and ducks and ravens and geese and horses of course.

It drizzles often - a couple of times a day. It doesn't get dark. The sun is almost always behind clouds. At night it's in the high forties. Days are in the low fifties. It's green. Very green. There's a grocery store and bakery ("Bakari") close by. Icelandic words don't seem to have anything in common with English, so we are excited when we find the rare one like bakari and use it a lot. We haven't yet touched Icelandic paper money. Everyone uses credit cards for everything - even a chocolate bar. Though more likely a soft serve cone or a hot dog - both of which is eaten often and with a lot of gusto.

The kids prefer Icelandic meat soup. It's lamb stew and sold everywhere piping hot, sometimes from food trucks in remote places. We made some at home and the kids ate it with ramen noodles. Evan ate like he hadn't eaten in days.

The bath water is geothermal. Homes don't use water heaters. Hot water is pumped from the ground, used to make electricity and then piped to homes. So there's plenty of it. The downside is the sulfurous smell. The kids (and I) think it's hilarious and fart jokes abound. Probably farts too but you wouldn't know.
