It's almost impossible to remember the names of places in Iceland because you can never say them. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are a couple of easy ones. They are also two water falls in southern Iceland. We put on our rain jackets to protect ourselves from the spray and potential showers and went exploring.
At Seljalandsfoss there is a path the goes all the way behind and around the falls. For scale, in the first photo look behind Evan's head. Those are people walking the trail. The falls are about 200 feet high.
Skógafoss is a few miles down the ring road. It has a lot more water coming down. For comparison, it's also 200 feet high - the same height as Seljalandsfoss but about 75 feet wide. The kids and I climbed up a sturdy steel and wood staircase built into the cliff all the way to the top.
These falls are popular with Icelandic wedding photos and we saw one group. Then we saw them again at the black sand beaches of Dyrhólaey.
The water for both the falls comes from the ice cap and snow melt of one of Iceland's more notorious volcanoes - Eyjafjallajokull. It's what halted air traffic in Europe with an eruption in 2010. Sharath can testify - he was stuck in Amsterdam for days. As we drove around and past the base of this charmer Jo read about a mnemonic to help you say the name. Mumble "I forgot my yogurt" a few times. That sets up the rhythm. Then replace "I" with "Aye-aa", "forgot" with "faat-la" and "yogurt" with "yo-gootl". And you are good to go. Easy peasy.
