Jo bought tickets online. We woke up at the crack of dawn and took a cab to the van Gogh museum to arrive there by 9am. We were in the first group to enter. And the very first people to leave. Four floors of stunning paintings by an amazing artist. On hour.
So here's van Gogh's "Skull with Burning Cigarette" (it was used as the cover of a David Sedaris book). In Europe more people smoke than in Austin. Evan's been told that smoking isn't good for you and we may have simplified it as "smoking kills". We walk by this painting and Evan stares at it and it confirms his fears. Now if he sees someone smoking he says "it's going to kill him (or her)". Then he chews on it a bit. "Why does he smoke if it's going to kill him?" he asks. To which Vivian philosophically answers "Everyone's got to die sometime, Evan".
And that's including the 15 minutes we spent in the interactive portion where Vivian sketched out a painting using the painter's perspective grid and Evan examined tiny pieces of the artist's work under microscopes. And the other 15 minutes in the museum store.
