August 26 is a hard day. I think about it for days before it actually arrives. But once it is here it is suspiciously like any other day. Arjun was killed while riding his bicycle six years ago on this date. Simran was nine.
The other day in a passing conversation on facebook Simran announced that she didn't know her dad. She didn't remember much about him. Those words initially felt like cold steel piercing my heart. How fleeting life is. How quickly you are a faded memory. But then too, how life pushes you forward. How strong youth is. And we celebrated that with frozen yogurt at Yogurt Planet after a dinner of rice and dal and naan-ini (think naan panini) at Tarka. Evan was so juiced up he left a huge mess of rice everywhere. I had to leave a second tip before quitely slinking away.
